Collection: Cold Pressed Extra Virgin Rapeseed Oil

Rapeseed Oil – This is the oil that we get from pressing the seed of the Oil Seed Rape crop.  This is a Brassica, which means that the crop is related to cabbages, mustard and turnips.  Oil Seed Rape became a popular crop in the UK during the 1970s.  It is one of the most common break crops and goes well in rotation with wheat.  It is usually planted in August and requires a good soil, with the perfect amount of moisture and needs protection from pests.  It really starts to grow from late February – growing from a small cabbage like flower to something over 1m tall in a matter of weeks.  You will notice the fields full of its yellow flowers around May and it is ready for harvest usually 11 months after it was sown.

Cold Pressed – This is the means by which we extract the oil from the seed.  The seed is gently pressed at room temperature; this happens slowly to ensure that all of the oil is extracted.  Nothing is added to the product during this process.  Cold pressing ensures that the colour and the flavour of the product are not compromised during the extraction process.  During pressing a by-product called cake is produced, this is then used as cattle feed as it still contains many nutrients.

Extra Virgin – this is the highest grade that an oil can achieve.  It means that no chemicals or extreme heat have been used during the extraction process and it is the first pressing of the oil.
